Beat the Summer Slide: A Simple 6-Week Plan to Keep Math Skills Sharp
Every summer, I hear the same concern from parents:
“My child worked so hard in math this year. How do I make sure they don’t lose what they learned?”
It’s a fair question. Math skills can get a little rusty when students go several weeks without using them. Research from NWEA shows that students may lose some of the math progress they made during the school year over summer break. Unlike reading, which students may practice naturally through books, signs, games, and everyday activities, math often gets pushed completely to the side.
But here’s the good news: your scholar does not need to spend the summer completing stacks of worksheets.
Summer math practice should be short, focused, and consistent. Think of it the same way you would think about practicing an instrument or staying in shape for a sport. When skills are used regularly, they stay stronger. When practice stops completely, it takes longer to get back into the rhythm.
Just 20 to 30 minutes of math practice two or three times each week can make a meaningful difference.
A Simple 6-Week Summer Math Plan
Week 1: Find Out What Your Child Remembers
Start with a short skills check or review a few assignments from the end of the school year. Pay attention to what your scholar can complete independently and where they begin to hesitate.
The goal is not to grade or criticize. You are simply figuring out which skills are still strong and which ones may need a little attention.
Week 2: Strengthen the Basics
Focus on the foundational skills your scholar will need next year. Depending on their grade level, this might include multiplication facts, fractions, decimals, integers, solving equations, or working with formulas.
Strong foundations make new learning much easier.
Week 3: Practice Problem-Solving
Give your scholar opportunities to solve word problems and explain how they reached an answer. Students often know how to complete a calculation but struggle to decide what a problem is asking them to do.
Ask questions such as:
What information do you already know?
What are you trying to find?
Which operation or strategy makes sense?
How can you check your answer?
Week 4: Connect Math to Everyday Life
Math does not have to live inside a workbook. Let your scholar calculate the cost of a meal, compare sale prices, measure ingredients, plan a budget, estimate travel time, or determine the area of a room.
Real-life practice helps students understand that math is useful, not just another subject they have to pass.
Week 5: Review the Most Challenging Skill
Return to the skill that caused the most difficulty during Week 1. Break it into smaller steps and practice it in short sessions.
This is especially important in courses such as Algebra and Geometry because the skills build on one another. A small gap left unaddressed can become a much larger frustration once school begins.
Week 6: Build Confidence for the New School Year
End the six weeks by revisiting the skills your scholar has practiced and celebrating their progress. Let them see what they can do now that felt difficult a few weeks earlier.
Confidence matters. Students are more willing to attempt challenging problems when they believe they have the tools to work through them.
Keep It Manageable
You do not need to recreate the school day at home. In fact, please don’t. It is still summer, and your scholar needs time to rest, play, explore, and simply be a kid.
A short session completed consistently is far more helpful than one long, stressful review session. Choose two or three days each week, set a timer, and stop before frustration takes over.
